How to play

RatRace is a multiplayer financial-literacy game inspired by the Cashflow board game. The rules below cover everything that drives the bottom-sheet decisions.

The goal

Build passive income (rent, dividends, business cashflow) until it exceeds your monthly expenses. That moment is when you escape the Rat Race and move to the Fast Track, a second board where the first player to amass $50,000 in cash wins the game.

Other players keep playing on the Rat Race in parallel. Multiple people can be on the Fast Track at once — first to the cash threshold wins.

Each turn
  1. Roll dice. Two d6, server-rolled — animation plays for everyone watching.
  2. Cross paydays as you move. Every time your token passes (or lands on) position 0, you collect one month of cashflow. If your monthly cashflow is negative (expenses > income), it’s deducted instead.
  3. Resolve the landing space — a deal, doodad, baby, downsized, or charity prompt opens automatically.
  4. End your turn. The next seat plays.

There’s a 90-second timer per turn. If it expires, anyone in the lobby can press “end turn” for you and the game advances.

Board spaces (Rat Race)
  • Payday   Position 0 only. Crossing earns one month of cashflow.
  • Small Deal   Cheap investments ($500 – $5k). Buy or skip.
  • Big Deal   Real estate / businesses ($12k – $45k). Buy or skip.
  • Doodad   Surprise expense. You always pay.
  • Baby   Adds a child (cap 3). Per-child cost goes onto your monthly expenses.
  • Downsized   Pay 1 month of total expenses + skip the next 2 turns.
  • Charity   Optional 10%-of-monthly-income donation. Pure cash drain (no boost in this version).

Fast Track swaps small-deal / baby / downsized / charity spaces for more big deals + larger doodads. The wealth-building track.

Deal cards: how to judge a deal

Each deal shows cost and monthly cashflow. The modal computes the annual yield (cashflow × 12 / cost) and tags it: great deal ≥ 12%, solid ≥ 8%, modest ≥ 4%, weak below.

That’s the core teaching: not all assets are good buys. A $5,000 asset paying $50/mo (12% yield) is great; the same $5,000 paying $20/mo (4.8%) is weak. Skip weak deals — your cash is more valuable than 5% returns.

When you can’t pay (auto-loans)

Adult mode: if a forced payment (doodad, downsized, negative payday) would push your cash below zero, you auto-borrow in $1,000 blocks at 10% / month. Each $1,000 borrowed adds $100 to your monthly credit-card payment until you repay. Don’t take this lightly — the interest compounds your expenses and makes escape harder.

Voluntary actions never auto-loan: if you can’t afford a deal you wanted, you have to skip it. Same for charity donations.

Kid mode: no loans. Cash can go negative — treat it as “you owe a parent”. Try to stay in the green.

Win condition

Step 1: Escape the Rat Race. When your passive income exceeds your monthly expenses, you flip to the Fast Track at the end of your turn. You keep your cash + statement; only the board changes.

Step 2: Win on the Fast Track. Be the first player to amass $50,000 in cash on the Fast Track. Big-deal yields are ~4–10% but cost $120k+, so paydays compound fast.

When you win, the game freezes for everyone — final standings appear, the snapshot archives to your profile history, and your win counter ticks up.

Kid vs Adult mode

Same rules, different scale.

  • Adult: 6 professions ($1,600 – $13,200 salary). Mortgages, taxes, school loans, credit-card balances. Big deals are real-estate / businesses. Auto-loans available.
  • Kid: 6 professions ($50 – $200 salary). No school / car / credit / retail debt — just income, spending, and savings. Smaller deal cards themed for younger players (savings jars, cookie batches, vending machines). No auto-loans.

Switch your default mode in the profile settings; the home page also has a per-game override.

Quick mental model: the goal is to make money work for you, not to chase the highest cash balance. A $5k asset that pays $80/mo is worth more than $5k in cash — because it earns every month, forever, no work required. That’s the whole game.
